The Mount Holly Community Garden is a vibrant raised bed haven planted in the heart of downtown Mount Holly, NC.  It is dedicated to and maintained by its community as a place to grow local, organic, seasonal food and flowers while fostering a healthy environment of activity, learning and community fellowship.

Located next to First United Methodist Church, the Mount Holly Community Garden is open to all citizens of Mount Holly.  It is a 501(c)(3) in conjunction with the Mount Holly Farmers Market.  The garden opened officially on April 11, 2015.  Fifty-two spacious raised beds exist among other surrounding flower beds such as a soon-to-be butterfly garden and a small greenhouse.  Next to the lovely garden share are compost bins, made of pallets, from which compost-a-plenty will soon be had.  The raised beds are rented on a yearly basis for $40 per year by individuals, families, and businesses.  Five of the beds are adapted for standing and/or wheelchairs.

Several beds are designated for use by the Mount Holly Community Relief Organization (CRO) and the Mount Holly Meals on Wheels.  Other groups, such as the Girl Scouts and church groups, have rented beds for the sole purpose of growing food for the CRO, and the other plot tenants are encouraged to donate at least 10% of their harvest to the CRO.  The community garden plays host to a variety of educational workshops on topics such as organic gardening techniques, tree banding, children’s planning and harvesting, and other garden related topics such as composting, food preservation, and even cooking demonstrations with food grown in the garden.

The Community Garden has received grants from the Gaston Community Foundation, Fiskars, the Mount Holly Rotary Club, and the Mount Holly Tourism Development Authority.  Early in 2015, each garden bed was sponsored by members of the community for $250.  This covered the cost of materials, construction, and a name marker for the bed.  The markers list the donors’ names and some were given in memory or honor of loved ones of donors.  The garden is selling personalized engraved bricks, which will be included in the beautiful new brick patio at the entrance way.  Each engraved brick sells for $50, so if you are interested, please see the attached order form, or let us know!
